INTRODUCING: Big Black Delta

INTRODUCING: Big Black Delta

Big Black Delta is the solo project of Mellowdrone vocalist/bassist Jonathan Bates and he’s been needling our inbox with slices of infectious electronic noise-punk recently. We caught up with him to find out what makes him tick, and he’s got a right gob on him…our kind of guy.

An alien lands on earth. He doesn’t really know much about bands/artists and that – as he’s an alien. How would you describe you and your music to said alien?
Well obviously, I’d just play them the music. Buts that’s not the answer you want. And that’s the point of music; so you don’t have to talk to people.

It’s 2012, the year of the dragon. What’s been your highlight of the year so far? It doesn’t have to be anything to do with dragons, but dragons are rad.
This trip to London, I’m having a good time

God calls you up, and he’s wanting to put on a show. Being God and all, he doesn’t really have time to choose bands, DJs or a venue. He’s put you in full control. Also – again, him being God and all – you can choose anyone alive or dead – he’s that good. Who’s playing and where?
I would choose to hold the premier for Bethoven’s 9th symphony…in 1824. Pantera would support…and Peabo Bryson too

What’s your favourite childhood memory?
Jumping off the roof into my parents pool.

What were the first and last pieces of music that you bought?
The first was Bon Jovi’s ‘Slippery When Wet’, the last; Pantera’s ‘Vulgar Display of Power’

What bands/artists are there around at the moment that people aren’t listening to enough? Any tips for future stardom?
Grimes, Too $hort, Sonoio.

What’s the rest of 2012 got in store for you?
The release of the record and touring hopefully.

That alien from Q1 is back – he’s just got his mitts on a computer, and he wants to find out more about you. Where’s the best place he can go to find out more and what should he check out first?
Well if he’s got a spaceship he should just come fucking see me. Because I’ll tell him everything he wants if he just gives me a ride in it.
