Rockers Morain have released a debut EP, available as a free download. It gives a good introduction to a band who play it fast and loud and do a nice line in anthemic songs. The Leeds boys have built a reputation as a fine live act and this first release is sure to bring them more attention.
The title track Are We Lost starts slowly before an explosive chorus bursts through the solid backing. Vocalist Will Frost has an engaging voice, smooth and strong and he also has the power needed to dominate the mix. The song is passionate and melodic and the changes of pace as it rises and falls see it swing from expansive to minimalist and back again.
Animals comes next, with some lovely guitar work over a solid rhythm section. The vocals are slightly less distinct on this one, although the chorus is solid. The guitar parts stand out more though, intricate and compelling.
The World We Live In is perhaps my favourite of the four tracks on the EP. It’s a big some with a massive chorus, in short a fine melodic rock song. Meaty chords set the rhythm and Frost’s vocal power is again used to good effect. The song builds nicely to the chorus, which is well delivered. A brief slow section towards the end precedes a big finish.
Between The Lines closes things nicely. A great bass line runs through the track and you can just tell this one will sound tremendous when played live. Again it’s melodic and the drums drive it forward as the guitar and vocals soar.
This is a decent first offering from a young band with talent. I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more from Morain – starting with an album which I believe is in progress at the moment.
