The Chapman Family’s release of ‘Cruel Britainnia’ served as a Lone voice in a summer full of patriotism. 4* in The Fly celebrated the EPs “brutally frank narration and blood-throated battle cries,” whilst Drowned in Sound’s 9/10 review eulogized it as their “strongest collection of songs to date,” and “this generations ‘God Save the Queen.’”
Clash proclaimed that the band are “as relevant in 2012 as they were three years ago – a British rock band to follow in The Horrors’ murky wake.” The 405’s 8/10 review echoed that sentiment suggesting it was “the most scathing depiction of a country in decline since The Smiths excoriating ‘The Queen is dead,’” and NME hailed it as “Angsty, cliché-free brilliance!”
Self-produced ‘Cruel Britannia’ indeed showcases their best song writing to date, continuing their reign as one of the best alternative bands in the country. The band return from their tour of Germany to play one London night only, a free gig at The Old Blue Last.
