We’re coming to the close of October and the leaves are turning, the nights are drawing in, gigs are feeling just that little bit more special in the cold night air and our favourite songs are carrying that extra bit of nostalgia as they keep us warm through the dark winter evenings.
Akin to the early avalanche of Christmas adverts and John Lewis specials, this time of year comes with an added treat that the press love to get excited about – the Album’s Of The Year lists. Never mind that there are still 2 months (that’s 1/6th) of the year left, we’re already being asked what the highlights of 2012 were as if the stage is being swept ready for 2013’s new crop of hopefuls.
A retrospective look at the year can unveil some forgotten gems, a few bands that should have made it but didn’t, some dance floor classics that haven’t been played for 6 months since that incident with the Jagermeister and the women’s toilets…a world of possibilities. But more often than not it serves as a stark reminder of how fleeting the modern attention span is, and how few and far between the truly great releases that stay with the listener for more than a few weeks are. Amidst a mountain of new releases and young contenders, who’s got the right sound, the right look, the right team behind them and of course that special something that makes them stand out from the pack?
A late release this year from Acres Of Lions with their new album Collections almost fell short of our attention, but we’re glad it didn’t, as stonking single ‘Reaction’ is one of our favourite tracks from the year. Stream it here:
This year has seen some stand out releases across the board, from major label artists right down to grass roots DIY artists proving time and time again that there is a wealth of creative talent and the UK is bursting at the seams with artists capable of competing, and dominating, on the global stage. When we post our Album’s Of The Year, we’ll inevitably forget a few that have slipped through the cracks, but we’ll be sure to include a healthy selection of genres – because that’s what we’re about here at Glasswerk, new music. Promoting new talent across the board is our prime objective, alongside bringing you breaking up to the minute news, reviews and content.
When you’re looking back on the year, don’t forget the little guys. They’re the ones who make the world go round.
