Rod Stewart – Let It Snow
I hate to be that guy who gets excited about Christmas early. Actually, that’s a complete lie – I love it. I love everything about Christmas. The food, the drink, seeing my family, the weather, the awful TV…but most of all I love Christmas songs. One of my all time favourites is Jona Lewie “Stop The Cavalry”, which probably says more about me than I would like it to.
Year on year the Christmas rush creeps further and further back, and over the last week we’ve been inundated with the first salvo of Christmas releases from Rod Stewart, John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John and a compilation from Hear Music called Christmas Rules featuring music from The Shins, Paul McCartney, Rufus Wainwright and a truck load of other musically rich and diverse artists.
The Shins – Wonderful Christmastime
Last year it was Zoe DeSchanel and M Ward warming our cockles by an open fire with the superb She & Him festive album that came complete with woolly hat and mittens for that extra Yuletide Hipster vibe.
There’s something about Christmas songs that instantly transport you to that festive generous spirit and warmth of character that we should try to embrace all year round, so for anyone still grumbling about Christmas starting eight weeks early; get over it Scrooge, some of us are trying to spread a bit of cheer the only way we know how – with some Grade A pop songs.
