If you’re into alternative rock from the US from 1991 till the present day (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), chances are your ears will be sympathetic to The Divers, a brand new London based quartet who reference everyone from Pearl Jam to Wilco to Band Of Horses in their rich, anthemic and hook-‐filled sound.
Formed in the summer of 2012 through a merging of various musical projects (essentially solo artist Pete Hickman recruiting a series of band members around him), The Divers have already played well-‐received shows at London venues such as Barfly, Ronnie Scott’s (Upstairs), The Borderline and Notting Hill Arts Club with fellow indie rock bands like Whales In Cubicles, Scoundrels, Escapists and Eye Emma Jedi -‐ gaining a slew of admirers in the process.
Early demo “A Little Better” was played on BBC Radio in Wales by Adam Walton (Hickman was a former resident of Wrexham) and a live studio video of it on YouTube quickly gained some traction on tastemaker blogs such as Killing Moon Limited and Some Of It Was True. The band were then picked up by singles label Laissez Faire Club (The Static Jacks, Channel Cairo, Jake Mattison), who offered to release the track as their debut single.
Acting as a lively and breezy introduction into the world of The Divers, “A Little Better” is almost bang-‐on three minutes of rock-‐pop bliss, with a chorus so endearing and catchy you’ll be excused for thinking it’s a long lost radio hit. Lyrically, it’s a straightforward tale about how money may not solve all your problems and how friends are everything in this life -‐ sung, of course, with a degree of catharsis you’d expect from a former singer-‐songwriter. The single is set for release on Monday 26 November through Laissez Faire Club, and will be backed with B-‐side “Hang Around”.
