The Traps - Calypso

The Traps – Calypso

‘Calypso’, the first official release from The Traps on their own Birmingham based indie label Speech Fewapy Records, comes out on 21st January. Combining upbeat tempos, an anthemic synth based beat, and a hooky guitar motif that will keep any indie dancefloor buzzing alongside a very cool vocal.

The influence behind the track and indeed their debut album is the character Calypso from Homer’s Odyssey poem, who captures Homer by leading his ship ashore. Lead singer Jamie explains “I’ve always been fascinated by the character of Calypso in the Odyssey. I think it is because her story isn’t really dwelt upon, but she is a tragic and flawed character denied what she desires most and they are always the most interesting. The fact that she is rarely given a voice makes her all the more intriguing and once I’d decided to write about her in this song, the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of her story guiding and influencing all the music and lyrics on the record”.

The track was recorded with producer Rob Jones (aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme) earlier this year during studio sessions for their debut album ‘Calypso’, which will be released in early 2013. Since the release of free downloads ‘Your Headland’ and ‘Moving Pictures’ earlier this year the band’s music has been featured on Sony’s Mobile Entertainment portal, a Nivea promotional video and had their artwork selected as featured background on the popular file transfer site wetransfer.com.

Hailing from Birmingham the band are Jamie Berry (Vocals/Guitar), Nick Berry (Bass/Vocals), James Minhas (Guitar) and Daniel Webb (Drums). The track will be available at all good digital stores and also alternatively through their website, link on January 21st 2013.

25th Jan – The Hare And Hound, Birmingham
