Funeral For A Friend – Conduit

Funeral For A Friend are a band that often experience the winds of change, with numerous line-up changes and an ever progressive sound, their latest release sees the addition of drummer Pat Lundy replace long time band member Ryan Richards, who leaves the band to focus on family life. ‘Conduit’ is FFAF’s sixth studio album, working once again with Welsh producer Romesh Dodangoda (Kids in Glass Houses, Yashin, The Blackout) making this their 3rd studio collaboration.

Conduit begins with the track ‘Spine’ where straight away you notice that the melodic guitar riffs which have been a focal point of previous albums, are masked by a new meatier rhythm section. The new combination of Lundy (Drums) and Boucher (Bass) produce a heavier more driven sound with more pace and distinction and unfailing stamina. This punchier sound is best displayed in the hardcore track ‘The Distance’ which excellently shows the bands maturity while still retaining the energy and passion that make this band who they are. Don’t be dismayed if you’re a fan of the melodic presence that FAFF usually have, it is still there underneath this more direct rhythm. Tracks like ‘Elements’, ‘Nails’ and ‘Death Comes To Us All’ still retain those metalcore guitar riffs FAFF are famous for and they are woven in with a refreshing intuition.

With the loss of Richard’s backing vocals Matt Davies-Kreye’s takes the opportunity to explore his vocal style on this record. While still retaining his own unique sound he successfully brings to life the lyrics of a mature band that’s seen a thing or two. With lyrical themes from the loss of friends to the relationship with an audience, the engaging approach to these tracks is definitely not a let-down.

The album rolls in at just under 30 minutes which compared to their other albums may leave you wondering if something has been left out, but rest assured this album feels complete. It is an onslaught of everything that is good about FFAF and a little bit more besides. The pace of this record really brings out the passion contained within and it’s a testament to the staying power of Funeral for a Friend.
