Zeds Dead – Hot Sauce
So here it is, the latest 5 track effort from Canadian production duo Zeds Dead. Prick up your ears and prepare for a varied electronic banquet.
First up on the EP is “Demons”. If a track could be likened to a rollercoaster ride, then this would be described as a stomping, nightmarish trudge through a haunted house that’s been possessed by mangled sawtooth waves and petrifying piano plinks. Disturbing synths bleed out a sinister vibe and the entire track is driven by a jarring bassline that’s bound to get under your skin.
“Mr.Sub” is where things start to deviate from the plan. A stripped back tune that’s pulled along effortlessly by a big rolling sub and phase-shifted samples, some might say subdued by normal ZD standards and perhaps bordering on chillout, but an interesting track nonetheless. “Rave” is exactly what it says on the tin. A tribute to sounds gone by, rammed with weathered samples and mashed together with breaks that culminate to give the track an undeniable old skool vibe, yet still managing to sound crisp and current, this is a no holds barred dancefloor killer.
“Playa” is where things get serious. A teaser of a track that starts out small and keeps you guessing with wide, undulating drums and a trance-like melody that is sure to make people stand up and take notice. “Trouble” has jacked up riffs galore accompanied by emotive choir-esque samples; not the strongest finish to an EP and if you’ve been following ZD from the beginning then you’ll realise this tune is deep within their comfort zone. Having said that though, top marks for execution.
Hot Sauce is a mixed bag in every sense of the word. If you’re expecting to hear some classic balls-to-the-wall ZD filth then you may be somewhat disappointed as the duo seem to have taken a more minimal approach with this EP. A fine musical spread split over 5 tracks, a solid performer in all areas, but a master of none. Nothing groundbreaking but still fun as hell – there’s something here for everyone.
