Mike Doughty – The Flip Is Another Honey

Ex-Soul Coughing man Mike Doughty doesn’t need to prove his songwriting prowess to anybody, so it’s a delight to find him revelling in the work of some of his favourite artists on latest covers release The Flip Is Another Honey.

With a healthy mix of genres and his own hand at the production helm for most of the release, Doughty really spreads his wings on this record and finds a new voice and angle that fans may not be familiar with but certainly opens doors for him in terms of accessibility.

Lead single and opener Sunshine (which we premiered on Glasswerk last week) is every bit as soul warming and joyous as its moniker, paving the way for the album to unfurl with stand-out oddball offerings like Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat and the smoky jazz-bar laced vocal of French number Ta Douleur. Doughty’s obvious artistic and creative ability shines through at every juncture on this album and the pleasure he takes in his craft is apparent on every track. Whilst not all the covers will be familiar to listeners, Cheap Trick and Thin Lizzy tracks keep things on an even keel for the less committed, and the attention to detail that peppers many of the tracks is surely Doughty’s signature, sealing the deal for the more serious music heads to add this release to their pile of must-listens.
