The Traps – The Honey Drip

The Honey Drip, the second release from The Traps, looks set to build on the strong foundations laid by their debut single Calypso. Released in January, Calypso garnered attention from the likes of Q Magazine and received much sought-after plays from John Kennedy (XFM), Chris Hawkins (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Janice Long (BBC Radio 2). The band’s rapidly expanding fan-base meant that both the Calypso launch parties in Birmingham and London both sold out.

The Honey Drip’s metronomic bassline and drumbeat allow the guitar and piano hooks to reign free throughout the song, while the band’s trademark melodies and harmonies drench the choruses. With a climactic outro laden with trumpets, saxophones, throbbing synths and heavy guitar hooks, The Honey Drip has become one of the standout songs from their live shows.

The track was recorded with producer Rob Jones (aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme) earlier this year during studio sessions for their debut LP ‘Calypso’, set for release in 2013.

Lead singer Jamie Berry says: “The Honey Drip is one of the most instant songs on the album. We’re always bowled away by the response it gets live. It’s also loosely tied into the album’s lyrical theme – the character traits of the nymph Calypso from Homer’s ‘Odyssey’. Clouded by her own desire for Odysseus but also knowing that despite her actions and persuasions there would be no future for this partnership she longed for, Calypso’s personal tragedy comes as a cost of being bound by her own affections.

It is a broad theme but also a very human one. We’ve taken this as the lyrical inspiration, rather than the direct subject, across the whole record and in this song. Imagining a character we were writing for helped us envisage a mood and an emotion to tap into both musically and lyrically.”

Since the release of free downloads Your Headland and Moving Pictures earlier this year the band’s music has been featured on the Sony Mobile Entertainment portal, soundtracked NIVEA’s ‘Say Hello’ campaign video, and had their artwork selected as the featured background on the popular file transfer site wetransfer.com. Their single Calypso has received over 23,000 plays on Soundcloud from around the world.

Hailing from Birmingham, the band are brothers Jamie Berry (Vocals/Guitar) and Nick Berry (Bass/Vocals), as well as James Minhas (Guitar); and Daniel Webb (Drums). The track will be available at all good digital stores and also alternatively through their website, www.the-traps.com on 13 May 2013.
