When we first started playing music…
We’ve been playing together in different bands since the late ’90s. But we first started playing music as Terry Malts in 2010. Our first show was a day show at The Knockout on March 27th, 2010- the day after Henry’s Dress reunited at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. We drank two and a half FourLokos each the night before at the Henry’s Dress show and essentially had the worst hangover after the best show ever. I remember laying my head on the bar of The Knockout and thinking, “I don’t know if we’ll survive this set”.
We chose our name because…
We wanted something that was almost completely unconnected to anything. It was also a drunken accident.
We knew we were onto something when…
We knew we were on to something when we survived the first show.
Our biggest influences are…
I think we all like such varying types of music that it would be tough to peg down just a few influences. I can tell you Bubba Dupree’s work with Void and Tom Flynn’s work in Fang are certainly two things that inspired the style of guitar-playing I do for Terry Malts.
We’re most proud of…
We’re most proud of working with Slumberland Records. A lot of labels purport to be “independent” but Mike is the real deal and he does it on his own. Show me another label of that size cranking out that much good music with just one person!
Our ideal support slot would be…
Our ideal support slot would be with Neil Young.
One item we can’t live without on tour…
One item we can’t live without on tour is the copy of Up On The Sun by Meat Puppets. For some reason we just listen to it a lot on tour.
We can’t stop listening to…
I’m not sure about the other guys so I can only speak for myself here. I can’t stop listening to the album Dark Star by Tom Diabo. My friend Matt and I are reissuing it on our label called Body Double. It’s a subsidiary of Captured Tracks. The album will be out in November 2013.
