Ben Taylor – Listening

Ben Taylor was something of a latecomer to the musical world, not writing songs until he was into his early 20s and releasing his first album aged 26. This is perhaps somewhat surprising given that his parents are James Taylor and Carly Simon. The younger Taylor now releases his fourth acoustic solo album Listening, which has an easy and laid back feel with occasional poppier moments.

The songs on the album were recorded over a period of four years or so, and that gives a rather eclectic feel to it. The musical backing comes mainly from acoustic and electric guitars with occasional organ and keyboard parts, and tends to be understated. This allows the focus to fall on Taylor’s smooth vocal style, which at times sees his lyrics almost spoken rather than sung.

The first three tracks run from the pop ballad Listening to the more upbeat Oh Brother and Not Alone’s synth stylings. Guilia then adds a touch of country in a track that shows a little vocal variety, which many of the other tracks on the album rather lack. At times Taylor’s easy listening approach can unfortunately result in a rather bland form of pop music.

Worlds Are Made Of Paper has a pop vibe that sounds a little like Simon and Garfunkel. America is sung in an unusual style that has a clear reggae influence and it doesn’t really work. Burning Bridges has a poignancy in its lyrics that the delivery doesn’t quite match up to. Shade Or Shine is similarly slow and expressive with several nice bursts of guitar that bring it to life. The closer Next Time Around gives a decent ending to the album, another track where the poetic lyrics really stand out.

Ben Taylor has a lot to offer as a songwriter, but many of the tracks on this album seem to lack a spark. His style is quiet and laid back, and at times the lack of energy gives a rather samey feel to the music. It can’t be easy to become a recording artist with such famous parents and while it is clear that Ben Taylor has inherited a great deal of talent I can’t help but feel that there is a lot more to him than is shown on Listening.
