The Tricks - In The Doghouse EP
Single Review

The Tricks – In The Doghouse EP

The Tricks were formed in Hertfordshire and now record in LA. Not bad for a young band – but that’s apparently what happens when you catch Johnny Depp’s eye. With a debut album on Depp’s label set for release early in 2014, this EP serves as a taster for the young pop/ rock band. The Tricks are a four piece, formed by brothers Joel Hodge (vocals, bass) and Ash Hodge (drums) who are joined by guitarists John Bisset and Eliot Crabtree.

Lead single Better is the core of this EP, the studio version recorded in LA with Grammy nominated producers Bruce Witkin and Ryan Dorn for Unison Music. The guitar riffs are catchy and the pace fast in a track that moves relentlessly forward. The vocals are strong and the drums pound before a sudden ending. It’s energetic and a good example of the Tricks’ anthemic style.

The EP also contains a longer version of the single together with a version recorded in John Bisset’s bedroom. The fourth track is The Dead Of Night, a bass heavy song that is slightly slower but no less intense. The vocals are slightly higher pitched in places, but the track has the same robust rock approach and the big chorus is catchy.

This is only the second release for The Tricks, coming after the successful 49 Mercury EP. The band has built its reputation on its formidable live shows, selling out many gigs and developing a large fan base. Next year’s debut album is definitely one to look forward to.
