Life Goes By is the second EP from Cardiff’s Baby Queens. The five piece band – two sisters, two cousins and their adopted sister – mix soul and hip hop influences into their pop music and this EP contains two very different tracks. It was produced by Cian Ciarán of Super Furry Animals and recorded in Cardiff at his Strangetown Studios
Life Goes By opens with some lovely vocal harmonies over a soft keyboard. The track soon speeds up with a soulful pop vibe taking over, the lead vocal well backed by the other members of the group. It’s a solid pop song, melodic and pleasing, and it has the potential to pick up a lot of radio play.
Second track So Real is a total contrast. Coming in at nine minutes long it initially has a slow and chilled out feel, the delicate vocals floating over an electronic beat. A second vocal takes over, slightly faster and passionate. The tracks seem to be ending, some nice vocal play leading it forward, and then it bursts into life. The musical outro mixes soul and synth beats nicely to create an atmospheric and upbeat finish. This is a song with several very distinct phases and it all comes together very well.
Baby Queens are a young band with a great deal of talent and this EP shows that they are not content to go down a girl band route. Instead they take different musical influences and create their own sound from them. Look out for more from Cara, Estelle, Monique, Ruth and Vanity in the future.
