Trad-folkers with a twist , Bellowhead, release their brand new festive themed single ‘Christmas Bells/Jingle Bells’ on 1st December this year and luckily for them, it’s exactly the kind of twee, revelry fuelled romper that you’d expect, nay demand, at this seasonal time of year.
Based on the mummers play ‘Christmas : his Pageant Play, or Mysterie of St. George’ written down by a Mr. H Slight and published in 1842, it seems a perfect fit for Bellowhead, taking a strange twist on the Father Christmas story and blending it with the tale of St. George & the Dragon. Suitably off-the-wall, even for this bunch.
The raucous b-side ‘Jingle Bells’ isn’t too far removed from the original but remains a proper folk-filled knees up all the same. If you’re a Bellowhead fan already or someone who’s not afraid of a bit of silliness it’s a slice of good-humored Christmas fun, anyone else might find the Victorian leanings a little too much to stomach.
We don’t care much for Bah Humbug here at Glasswerk HQ; we love a bit of Christmas and we love this lot too.
