Adventure Time – Season One DVD Review

910ZPPdXuFL._SL1500_Adventure Time is the internet-turned-television cartoon starring Jake the Dog and Finn the Human as they embark on their adventures throughout the land of Ooo. It’s a mad series where there’s little that can’t happen and, as preposterous and wild as this may sound, the end product is more heartfelt than you may know.

Each 11-minute episode sees our heroes take on such tasks as venturing to Lumpy Space, tackle the most ignorant and obnoxious of trolls and saving various princess’s from the Ice King. Many of the tales have a moral or a lesson at it’s heart, which is always good for the general audience who you would expect to watch this. These lessons can be anywhere from the idea of lying and stealing, to Finn dealing with his feelings towards Princess Bubblegum.

However, another important factor to note is the level of fart jokes, innuendoes used and adult themed jokes used throughout the course of Adventure Time, leading it to be one of the few cartoons which young and old will enjoy – but almost more prominently it will be the adults who are delighted. These jokes will fly over the heads of those less informed, and hit with a heavy dose of hilarity to those old enough to appreciate them.

The characters are as fleshed out as you would expect from a child-friendly cartoon, and there is no interlinking storyline between the episodes other than Jake and Finn’s undying friendship. Episodes such as ‘My Two Favourite People’ deal with this, where Jake tries to get his best friend Finn and his girlfriend Lady Rainicorn (a unicorn you only speaks Korean) to get along.

Other great episodes include ‘City Of Thieves’, where every inhabitant of a small town is a thief, and ‘Evicted!’, which sees the introduction of the vampire queen Marceline, who sucks the colour red out of anything, not just blood. Strawberries, for example.

Each episode ends with a random loud joke that seems irrelevant to the entirety of what preceded it, if only to act as a punch to make you want more, and it succeeds.

An easy afternoons watch or spread out and taken in small doses, Adventure Time Season One is a must this Christmas for anyone who enjoys a laugh, no matter how mature you believe your sense of humour to be.
