You’re Next Review

YOURENEXT_DVD_RETAIL_2D2011’s You’re Next makes its UK debut on Blu Ray and DVD on the 13th Jan courtesy of Lionsgate and it brings a welcome breath of fresh air back to the modern horror genre.

You’re Next is a home invasion style horror flick which centres on the Davison family, the parents of which have recently purchased a remote house in the country. During a reunion dinner things quickly turn into a bloodbath as the family become the focus of masked lunatics who are intent on slaughtering them like wild animals. But little do they know, someone at the party has a few skills that will give the sadistic killers a problem that they had not bargained for!

This isn’t your straight run of the mill home invasion styled film either, with many twists and turns this definitely stands out from the rest and will keep the viewer on the edge of their seats with some blood thirsty kills and great effects intertwined with a clever story which keeps you guessing up until the last scene.

It is however the cast that helps move this tale with great performances from Sharni Vinson (Home and Away, Bait) AJ Bowen (The House of the Devil, Chillerama) and Nicholas Tucci (Choose). All as convincing as the next in the roles they portray in the story. We also get an appearance from Ti West, director of The House of the Devil and Innkeepers.

But by far the biggest name on the bill is the return of the gorgeous Barbara Crampton, best known for her roles in classic horror outings like Reanimator and From Beyond. Barbara returns to the big screen as the mother of the Davison family and proves she is still one of the female horror greats of our generation.

You’re Next isn’t anything ground-breaking and doesn’t really bring anything new to the table, but what it does excel in is reminding us of what horror films used to be like and what horror films should be like. The special effects are well thought out and look great on screen and are reminiscent of 80’s style horror effects which are a win for any modern horror these days when others quite happily rely on CGI for their thrills.

So in short, if you like your horror with a hint of the 80’s and plenty of gore then You’re Next is definitely one for you.

4 Stars
