The Colony Review

colonyYou never know what to expect from direct to disc releases; but once in a while the little money given to film-makers is spent in just the right places.

The Colony is a chilly vision of the future where we have entered a new ice age. Survivors congregate in underground bunkers to survive, whilst staying in touch with other colonies who are trying to reverse the effects of the weather.

When one other colony sends out a distress signal – noble leader (Laurence Fishburne) takes a couple of recruits to aid the cause, but what they find there upon arrival threatens theirs and everyone else’s lives. Meanwhile back at the ranch, local paranoid gun-totter (Bill Paxton) is fully intent on the survival of the fittest, by executing the weak.

The film is well realised with a variety of effects that put most low budget Direct to DVD releases to shame. When the film is required to get dark it does not shy away from its subject and knows how to build tension well with some lovely panning through dark corridor set ups. The film is cast well, and makes good use of the names they have. If you are seeking something off the radar (in more sense of the word than one) then this one satisfies to the end.
