Stream New Track From Mungo’s Hi-Fi
In the tradition of the classic soundsystem soundclash, Mr Bongo release ‘Prince Fatty vs Mungo’s Hi-Fi’ – south vs north, roots vs evolution – a battle of dub versions. Each crew has remixed five tracks from their counterpart’s catalogue, injecting the originals with their own reggae vibes.
Put together by producer and engineer Mike Pelanconi (whose credits include Lilly Allen’s ‘Alright Still’ and Little Barrie ‘Stand Your Ground’), the Prince Fatty band includes Little Roy, Bubblers from the Ruff Cut Band, Style Scott from the Roots Radics, Winston Francis, Horseman and Hollie Cook (also of The Slits).
Prince Fatty’s authentic early-70s-sound is created in an analog haze of vintage spring reverbs, tape echoes and custom hi-grade mixing console at his own Brighton seaside studio Ironworks. The Fatty catalogue includes 2008 debut ‘Suvival Of The Fattest’, follow up ‘Supersize Me’ and ‘The Return Of Gringo’ – a Western themed collision of surf and ska – as well as a number of one off hip hop covers (‘Insane In The Brain’, ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’, ‘Gin N Juice’). Prince Fatty has worked with the likes of Bukky Leo, Nostalgia 77, Prince Buster, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Studio One.
From Glasgow, Scotland Mungo’s Hi-Fi are re-invigorating soundsystem culture, championing the evolution of reggae, dub and dancehall music. The outfit includes Tom Tattersall, Douglas Paine, Craig Macleod, James Whelan and Jerome Joly. Scottish label Scotch Bonnet released double LP ‘Soundsystem Champions’ in 2008 and ‘Forward Ever’ in 2011.
Their formidable live shows collaborate with foundation legends like Ranking Joe, Sugar Minott and Sister Nancy as well as top vocalists on the scene including Charlie P, Solo Banton, Mr Williamz, YT and Scotland’s own lyrical lassie Soom T. Mungo’s Hi-Fi tour the UK and beyond between March and the end of June where they take their own soundsystem to Glastonbury Festival.
