Nothing Left To Fear Review

nltfI’d heard about Nothing Left To Fear I’d heard about long before I saw it – This is the first film produced by Slash through his production company, Slasher Films. This is produced by one of rocks greats and inspired by and urban legend about Stull, Kansas being home to one of the ‘Seven known gateways to hell’, its got to be awesome right? Well it left me uninspired.

From the start you know something bad will happen to the ‘city folk’ who come to the small town to start fresh, Pastor Dan (James Tupper) moves his family to Stull after being offered a new role in the parish. From the first night different members or the family either see things out of the ordinary or suffer nightmares. Most of the people in this small town seem to be weary of the newcomers and on the night of the Summer festival we learn why… One of them, with the help of Pastor Kingsman, will open the gates of hell which the town sits on. Then it will be a race against the darkness to close the gate and stop the devil from destroying them. And will the family be torn apart in the chaos?

Over all the film feels like a mix of The Lottery, The Wickerman and every possession film we’ve seen the last few years. It had potential but didn’t run with them, there were flickers of good moments but strip those away and whats left is a weak story.

The acting for the ‘teenage’ leads Rebekah Brandes and Jennifer Stone and creepy former Pastor, Clancy Brown are the slight saving grace in this film. Anne Heche was pretty much sleepwalking through the role, and the rest of the cast just seem misplaced. The plot was slightly too thin and cliched, and there weren’t many surprises which caused my attention to fade. I probably would have worked much better as a short film.
