Well, it took ’em a while, but Brighton indie-giants The Kooks are back and you might not recognise them.
Far from the seaside twang of their early material, The Kooks return April 20th with new single ‘Down’, written by front man Luke Pritchard and young hip hop pioneer Inflo. Yep, you heard us right, The Kooks done went a little bit hip-hop, and the strange news is that it works.
It’s got swagger, a drawled deep-south tinged vocal, a drum beat you could sire a thousand children to and a spine-tingling gospel breakdown. It’s mental, it’s different, it’s great.
“With this record we didn’t do any rehearsing beforehand,” Luke Pritchard says. “I’d write a song with Inflo or on my own, put it up and we’d all play over it. There was a real freedom to the process.”
