A Quick Chat With The High Wire
We caught up with London-based trio The High Wire ahead of the release of their new album ‘Found In Honey’, due 14th July, to find out more about their latest video starring Ray Winstone and their penchant for Cher. Cast your meat pies over this one, geezers….
When we first started playing music…
We were like 3 strangers singing 3 different songs in 3 clashing styles. We all came to the band from very distinct perspectives, bringing baggage, good and bad, with us. It’s taken time to adapt and play off, and for, each other, so that we can push our individual strengths and support the other 2. Um, in other words: When we first started playing music… we were really pretty rubbish!
If we had to choose a new name for the band it would be…
Forrest Wilson… because that was the name Ross was using to write under before he joined the band, and Alexia and I really like it; it’s got a west-coast feel to it, if we used it we’d have to really work on our Mamas And Papas harmonies. ‘All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey….’
We knew we were onto something when…
I don’t think we do know, or ever will. We hope it, and we have thrown (and continue to throw) everything at it… but in terms of proof…? You gotta have faith faith faith.
Our biggest non-musical influences are…
London (one day loving, the next day hating), Vancouver Island
We’re most proud of…
(As a band…) just getting our 3 albums made. We have constantly relied on incredible favours, good faith and the insane generosity of the people who have helped us ( – must in particular mention Rik Simpson who has given more time and help to us in producing and mixing than we could ever possibly repay. Legend.)
Our ideal support slot would be…
Anyone who’s heading off on a world tour… we would love that with any band!
Something we haven’t achieved yet which we’d like to is…
A hit.
Our favourite place to hang out is…
Our tiny studio room in Gospel Oak in North London. We are so lucky to have had the space, which belongs to our friends’ band, for the last couple of years. When you need to refresh your head if things aren’t going well you can climb up on to the roof and look over the whole of London. Having a space like that lent to you makes feel even more that you have to make something great because you are so lucky to have it.
We can’t stop listening to…
The Triffids ‘Wide Open Road’… “It’s a wide open road, it’s a wide open road….”. God I love that song so much. Totally perfect.
We’re not ashamed to admit that…
I was just listening to (and loving) ‘Just Like Jesse James’ by Cher… “Strutting into town like you’re slinging a gun, just a small town dude with a big city attitude…”. Ace.
