Samoans – Rescue

The debut release from Samoans, Rescue, is as strong as you’d expect from the quarter. The band have made a name for themselves as a consistent math-rock outfit, and now have the proof that they have what it takes to step on the same lines as their peers. Rescue is a perfect introduction to the band, especially for fans of the likes of Deftones and Reuben, but also to the genre.

Math-rock can be a tough one to get into, but Samoans act as an entry level band to this version of alternative rock. Tracks like ‘The Moth’, and, most predominantly, ‘I Am Your Destiny’ showcase the talent that the young Welshmen offer, and it would be a disservice to say otherwise.

The record came as a result of the bands lead singer, Daniel Barnett, broke his back and was bed ridden for months, halting any touring for Samoans. But a direct result of this was the time dedicated to the writing of the record, liberating Barnett from his isolated months of boredom. The product is the aptly titled Rescue, an album that the quartet can be more than proud of. Check out ‘Tightrope Walker Complex’, or Lightening Beneath The Sea’ for quick evidence of this, but Rescue is an album to be delved in to, and listened to from end to end.

It weaves through at a gilded pace and is never over bearing, but always enjoyable. A leap forward for the band, Samoans are no longer towing the line behind their peers, but now act as the band to catch up with. They’ve made their mark in a genre they’ve followed for years, and will be making plenty more in the future.
