Dolls Blu-ray Review

dollsBack in the 80’s, Stuart Gordon brought us some classic horror tales in the form of the Reanimator, From Beyond and Castle Freak. Now thanks to 101 Films, another one of his creepy tales finds its way onto the shelves with the release of Dolls.

Dolls tells the tale of a family who get stranded during a storm and then finds shelter within a house owned by the Hartwickes. The Hartwickes make Dolls for a living and have a massive array of childhood toys in each room of the mansion.

Along with 2 young punk girls and the guy who picked them up hitch hiking (Also stranded in the storm) they have to spend the night in the Hartwicke mansion in what turns out to be a fight for their lives, when the Dolls start to pick the unsuspecting guests off one by one! Can the inner child in each of these guests be the only thing that may save them?

A little different to the normal story we would come to expect from Stuart Gordon, but this captures the 80’s style of humorous horror perfectly.

The character introductions are short and sweet, but within minutes you decided who should be on the kill list and will not be disappointed with the end results

At times the atmosphere created can be a little creepy and move you to the edge of your set, but the laughs soon settle the nerves.

Unfortunately, the restoration to Blu Ray that 101 films have offered isn’t at the best standard compared to some other studios offerings. At best it’s as good as an up scaled DVD.

The extras on the disc too are also sparse as we only find a commentary on this edition. Most people would like to see at least the original trailer or maybe some behind the scenes goodies if were really lucky!

If you’re a fan of Stuart Gordon’s movies, or just love the aura of the 80’s horror film then Dolls is a must for any collection. But just expect too much in the way of content for your dollar.
