A Quick Chat With Syd Arthur

Canterbury psych-rock quartet Syd Arthur will release their new single ‘Autograph’ through Harvest Records on 6th October as they return to the UK this week for a headline tour. We caught up with drummer Josh to find out more about how this band like to…expand their horizons…

We first started playing music…
As a band when we were teenagers growing up at school together. Me and Joel are brothers so have been jamming, writing, recording together since we were young kids. Raven joined us a little later after we had been going for a couple of years.

If we had to choose a new name for the band…
I wouldn’t tell you because great names are valuable and someone would read it and use it. There are many that might arise if the name had to change, I have lists and lists of titles and names and it would be chosen because we liked the message it put out and if it felt comfortable to be around.

We knew we were onto something when…
We discovered all the Canterbury bands from the so called ‘Canterbury scene’ of the late 60’s/70’s. It was a real eye opener to find that these great bands were from our neck of the woods and this solidified our faith in the path we were on.

Our biggest non musical influences are…
All the art and literature that surrounds us in the world, coupled with certain mind expanding techniques [no idea, but we are assuming this means loads of drugs – ed]

We’re most proud of…
Breaking out of England and signing our deal with Harvest Records.

Our ideal support slot would be…
Something like Flaming Lips or Tame Impala… right now I think that would kick it.

Something we haven’t achieved yet which we’d like to would be…
Album three, which is brewing in our minds and will begin as we settle down into winter.

Our favourite place to hang out is…
Smugglers festival in Kent or Small World festival in Kent – these two are gems.

We can’t stop listening to…
Dimlites remix of Autograph, it’s genius the way he has worked that song into a new place.

We’re not ashamed to admit that…
We are making very little money off music still. We are broke because we put it all back in the pot to keep things moving.

Catch us next…
