We’re always lamenting the demise of the songwriter in our bitter articles here on Glasswerk so imagine our unrestrained delight when we stumbled across this absolute gem from the Rowan Martin Band.
In a thoroughly authentic sounding nod to the golden-age of balladry, this ramshackle group manage to faithfully, gorgeously and artfully blend the magic of Burt Bacharach, David Bowie, Elton John, Elvis Costello and any greats you care to mention into an ambrosial treat layered with angelic piano, soprano sax and vocal harmonies.
The songwriter, from the mock-tudor no man’s land of flight-path London, took 8 months in motorway pubs and an NHS pencil-pushing job to pen their debut release and was joined by pianist George Brown Griffiths and vocalist Hebe Morwenna, who were recruited from wedding bands and hotel lobbies. Virtuoso saxophonist Robin Sell was the final piece in the mosaic.
Colour us bloody impressed and begging for more please folks – listen to ‘Unravelling’ here:
