Leprechaun Origins Review
WWE films release yet another horror film for the Halloween seasons with the reboot of the classic tale of the leprechaun, made famous by the little man himself, Warwick Davis.
One has to ask themselves though, when WWE decided to reboot this 90’s classic, if they were actually aware if it even existed? Because there is very little in this film to suggest any connection what so ever, except for the title alone.
Leprechaun – Origins, focuses on two couples travelling through Ireland who are offered a cabin by the locals, for them to stay. But not all is as it seems as they find that one of the countries legends is real and out for their blood. They also discover it looks nothing like the cheeky little Irish imp off the cereal packet!
As previously mentioned, if fans of the original are expecting a light hearted horror romp like its predecessor, then think again! The leprechaun in this tale is more of a monster than a little dwarf dressed in green with little gold buckles and a hat! But what it actually looks like, you can never really tell. When the leprechaun is around, the camera work is an absolute mess, and you struggle to see exactly what’s going on and with whom? And as the films goes on, you find yourself not really caring! It’s a shame that they didn’t make more use of the fact that they had Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl, playing the Irish mythical legend, as this is probably the next biggest draw for the films audience after the original Leprechaun fans. So it’s pretty certain that both camps will be left disappointed after a viewing.
The character development is pretty much non-existent, which is pretty standard for a horror these days, but WWE’s previous effort this year with See no evil 2, managed to break the recent trend on this and it’s probably too much to ask that this film may have followed in its footsteps.
If its thrills and frights your after this Halloween, then you’d probably be better off spending your gold on another film, because this one just doesn’t make the grade.
