Felony Review

felonyActor Joel Edgerton has penned this Australian cop drama which he also stars in as Detective Mal Toohey, a well regarded police officer who after a few too many drinks with the boys one night celebrating decides to drive home and as a result ends up clipping a boy off his bike and then into a coma.

The result is his superior officer (Tom Wilkinson) seeking to help Mal while new guy in town Jim Mellic (Jai Courtney) is looking to uncover the cracks in the scene of the accident, and therefore in the department.

Mal’s fit of depression and guilt over the incident starts to tear his personal life apart affecting the relationship with his wife (Melissa George) as well as his conduct as an officer of the law.

This is low budget fairly tele-visual drama at its heart and has probably made it this far thanks to its top notch cast and the performances they give. Edgerton’s script is very competent but the film never really strives further outside of its own basic parameters.

It’s well played by the main leads – so fans of any of the actors will get a lot of value out of this, but it isn’t likely to be the highlight of any of their careers, save for Edgerton branching our beyond acting.
