Sponsored post: As someone who is decidedly British, but ultimately descended from immigrants to the UK, I find the current air of political outrage and lack of empathy towards the plight of immigrants distasteful. Even more so in that my own ancestors were refugees of the Second World War looking for a safe haven amidst the chaos of1940’s Eastern Europe. From 7th – 10th November, if he were around to navigate his way across the mind-boggling technology we all now employ on a daily basis, my Grandfather might have found some solace in the Find My Past website, who are offering a ‘free weekend’ service to help discover the unexplored territories of your family history.

Losing touch with a whole branch of our family in his move across the world, we often wonder exactly who we are descended from – a sting felt more keenly as I never had the chance to ask my Grandfather any questions about his life or his own family. Like millions of others, our secrets are lost to time, but this Remembrance Weekend, Find My Past want to help everyone find their First World War ancestors and learn more about their family history.

The website will be opening up their archives of billions of records and newspaper pages from all over the world between midday on Friday, November 7th to midday on Monday, November 10th (GMT). This will give access to millions of birth, marriage and death records, census, land and substitute records from the US, UK, Ireland and Australia, travel and migration records, plus military records from all over the world, including World War 1 records.

Maybe we’ll get our chance to know a little more of ourselves after all.
