We’ve been following Hawaiian resident Matthew Kammerer’s musical journey as producer Mkaio for a while here at Glasswerk and now he’s launched details of his first side project, N0RTHRN.LGHT5.
This alter-ego is a heavier, fuzzier, harder mix of trap, electronica and house that began when Kammerer’s PC crashed and he lost all work on his next Mkaio record.
“Sending it in to be serviced and attempt to recover my data, I had a couple months in which I just could not be idle” he told us “So I envisioned another musical outlet, one where I could explore some harsher sounds, some harder beats, and mix my love of electro, EDM and hip hop. I sometimes compose pieces which I love, but do not fit with the sound of my Mkaio records.”
Equal parts Daft Punk, Pink Floyd and Timbaland, it still bears all the hallmarks of Kammerer’s nature inspired approach to music and the new record will be released online and on CD on January 6, 2015 with a vinyl pressing to come in the future.
Entitled “GR33N.4UR0R4,” the EP can be streamed in full here:
