Fucked Up guitarist Ben Cook has announced the brand new mini-LP ‘Ripe 4 Love’ from his new side project Young Guv, due out on 9 March via Slumberland Records.
After ghostwriting for the likes of Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson, it’s an intriguing look at the softer side of the erstwhile hardcore punk rocker and you can check out the lead-track from Ripe 4 Luv, the 7 minute “Wrong Crowd” below.
Describing the song, Cook explains: “‘Wrong Crowd’ was written on a day off in Australia in a random person’s bedroom I found off Facebook to work on music that day. The song is about a man wrongly accused of robbery, writing his wife from prison.”
Variously compared to Prince and Cheap Trick, there’s actually more of the rolling, funky pop that made Hall & Oates a household name – the production feels analogue and retro and grooves along on a slap bassline and ride-cymbal-heavy beat.
