Newcastle singer songwriter Mat Hunsley first caught our attention supporting James Veck-Gilodi in his home town recently and we were so impressed with his latest demo ‘Ballroom’ (which you can stream in full below) that we had to include him in our tips for this year.
His chilled out folk is reminiscent of Laura Marling, Iron & Wine and Ben Howard – in places brittle and stripped back, in others orchestral and powerfully emotive. On the new demo, gentle piano and strings bolster the already raw and philosophically slanted storytelling and lend a real authenticity to this disarmingly young songwriter.
With a husky lilt that frames him as a man twice his age, we’re intrigued to see where Hunsley can take his erudite and graceful offerings over the course of the coming year.
