In the first of our new Behind The Music series, COLT 45 drummer Adam Lewis joins us to talk about the inspiration and the ideas behind the Cumbrian punks’ latest single Salt Water – you can check out the video, which was released today, below…
We’re so pleased to finally release our video for ‘Salt Water’, it’s a special track for us and we’ve been looking forward to getting it out there for a while. Some good friends of ours star in the video, and it was filmed by friends from a company here in Cumbria – so it’s got a really organic and local vibe to it. That’s important for us, because without our local roots and network of friends, we wouldn’t even have an album, never mind the opportunity to tour and promote our music.
The track itself is a bit different to the rest of our debut album, ‘The Tide Is Turning,’ and it’s quite dark, so hopefully we’ll reach new audiences as well. It’s a good follow-up to ‘OK’ which was a lot more poppy and upbeat. Salt Water is more about being fed up with the frustrations of daily life when you’re dreaming of something better – a bit like working full-time to support being in a busy DIY band – and just reaching that tipping point where you think “fuck this, let’s go”.
It was the last song we wrote and recorded for the album, but it’s the first track which is interesting – in the past we’ve always had a fairly solid idea of structure before going in to the studio, but this one took us all by surprise. Hopefully it’ll continue to surprise and help us reach new fans ahead of what looks set to be our busiest year yet!
