We Are Harlot – We Are Harlot

Anyone giving We Are Harlot’s eponymous debut album a listen and expecting to hear Asking Alexandria Part II will be sorely disappointed – Danny Worsnop’s new full-time project is a ballsy old-school rock’n’roll affair, with all the lovable sleaze of classic 80’s hard rock records by AC/DC and Mötley Crüe. The hype generated by Danny Worsnop’s departure from Asking Alexandria to focus fully on We Are Harlot has understandably led to some pressure regarding their debut, but the band has delivered.

The collective previous experience of the band’s members has led to a polished and assured debut; there is a swagger and a bravado to these songs, and it is sonically sound; Jeff George’s guitar work is nothing short of incredible, to say the least. However, the sheer amount of riffage and indulgent solo work can grate a little.

Danny Worsnop is also in his element on this record; it seems he has found his sound. Songs like ‘Someday’ allow the frontman to explore a different side to his vocals – the man can sing. His melodic vocals, it seems, were made for showing off on slower songs like ‘Easier To Leave’.

Second ‘Denial’ is a subtle nod to Danny’s heavier roots, but for the most part the record is a light-hearted, fun-filled affair. There isn’t much emotional depth here; the record’s lyrics revolve around the themes of sex and drugs and rock’n’roll (of course they do) and as much as it pains me to admit it…We Are Harlot know what they’re doing, and they do it well.
