My Life In Music: Jimmy Whispers

Chicago underground pop wunderkind Jimmy Whispers released his debut album ‘Summer in Pain’ last month to a raft of critical praise, so we caught up with him to get the lowdown on what’s on his stereo and where he draws his musical inspiration from:

“It’s always weird when someone asks what I listen to. I’m not even sure anymore. The vast majority the past couple years has been top 40 hip hop and R&B throwbacks, which I guess most people wouldn’t assume.”

“It just fills space up in my mind that hasn’t been taken up already and I feel like I’m not thinking at all. My mind is fucked. I drive all day for my day job, and just listen to the radio. I used to only listen to my own music in my car, or songs that I was working on. But that just drove me insane.”

“Radio keeps me sane. I believe in the radio. I live through the radio. In my mind I’m making music just like this. I’m writing top 40 songs, not bedroom pop or lo-fi music. Just a relate-able phrase and sugary melody that gets hammered into your skull…”
