Digging Up The Marrow Review

DIGGING_UP_THE_MARROW_DVD_SLV_V0cOne of our picks from last year’s FrightFest – Genre filmmaker Adam Green steps in front of the cameras (as well as remaining behind it) for his latest horror feature. The bloodless, but inventive and thoroughly enjoyable monster romp Digging Up the Marrow.

It’s been a while since we’ve explored the things that go bump in the night. Monster movies are few and far between these days, and the design and creation of these particular creature effects are down in no small part to artist Alex Padree who helped Green conceptualise the idea for the film.

Green (playing a version of himself on screen) is filming documentary footage with a man named William Dekker (Ray Wise) who claims to have found a place where monsters live.

Decker is himself quite the secretive and strung out type who wants to share his secret with the world, but at first it seems in a fashion that doesn’t shed any light onto whether monsters actually exist or not.  Green and his cinematography (Green’s real life cinematographer Will Barratt also playing himself) grow increasingly frustrated and start to question everything.

Adam Green keeps DUTM short like most of his previous films. As a result you get a fast paced film that takes it’s time to set up some fairly effective spooks and scares.

Horror fans will also have fun spotting alumni from the horror filed from Kane Hodder, to directors Tom, Holland and Mick Garris.

Extras are on the slim side – Some deleted material and there is a peek behind the scenes.
