A Quick Chat With American Fangs
We caught up with American Fangs drummer Micah Miller following their appearance at Download Festival earlier this month to find out more about their new album, Dirty Legs, released 4th July on Best Before Records.
When we first started playing music…
…together in this band we just wanted to write music that we loved, even if no one else enjoyed what we were doing. Honestly, it took some time for people to come around to what we were doing. 3/5’s of us played in a previous band together that was very different stylistically and everyone expected we’d be that band reincarnated…but fortunately, in time, folk came around and have been gracious enough to bang their heads and sweat with us.
If we had to choose a new name for the band it would be *insert name* because…
BNGRZ (Bangerz) because why not hop on the no vowels-in-your-name bandwagon and keep it relative to what we are all about…turning up and going 100MPH!
We knew we were on to something when…
…we released Shot and the music video for Le Kick in 2009. That video provided the wave we surfed for years to come. And honestly, that song is still as fun to play live today as it was when we first wrote it.
Our biggest non-musical influences is…
…pop culture and the good ole’ days. We’re a lot less rowdy in the party department these days, but we still enjoy a nice group gathering. BBQ is a bonus!
We’re most proud of…
…the fact that 5 normal ass dudes from Houston, Texas have been able to live out our childhood daydreams and play our jams nationally and internationally. It’s truly been an honour and a privilege. We’ve had quite the roller coaster of a career so far, but we are blessed to have been able to do what we’ve done. Each new experience is sprinkles on top of the icing.
Our ideal support slot would be…
…Biffy Clyro in the Eastern side of the world, and another stint with rock legends Deftones on the Western side. Fuck it…World Tour: Deftones, Biffy Clyro, American Fangs. Boner!!!
Something we haven’t achieved yet which we’d like to is…
…we’ve now been to the UK twice but yet to venture outside of its boundary. We’d love to get ourselves into Europe, Russia, Japan and Australia. Bang our heads with some of those fine folks!
Our favourite places to hang out are…
…we are creatures of habit, so although Houston has a plethora of dope options, we generally find ourselves at Dirt Bar and/or The Drinkery Midtown. Fine establishments with completely different vibes, but equally top notch owners.
We can’t stop listening to…
…2 bands that have been on repeat are: RDGLDGRN and Violent Soho. Both such dope bands that deserve to be smashing shows globally. Peep them hoes!!
We’re not ashamed to admit that…
…we’re not rock stars. We’re just normal, everyday dudes who have been fortunate enough to create something that’s bigger than us as individuals. Answering these questions is an awesome part of the day!
If we could wave a magic wand and make anything in the world happen it would be…
…Interstellar travel, some humans could fly like Superman, and those who couldn’t could have magic flying carpets like Aladdin. It’d help cut down on the price to travel the world.
Someone you might not have heard of that you should check out is…
…Wilson. They’re an up and coming band from Detroit, Michigan we had the pleasure of touring with back in 2013 in the States. Those dudes are a blue collar, no bullshit, rock and roll band. They bring the sweat live and are genuine, good, nice fellas. They hit the UK for the first time earlier this year and are dropping a new album next week…they’re a must see!
