Usually when something gets billed as “one of the most exciting new bands in the world” we shrug our shoulders here at Glasswerk and let out a hearty “meh”.
On this occasion, we might be willing to swallow our pride and just bundle right on the bandwagon, as Australian quintet Stories have just announced their debut album The Youth To Become, released on Friday August 14 via UNFD and available to pre-order now.
Should you be excited about this? If you worship at the altar of the riff then yes – yes you bloody well should. Why? Because UNFD are also the label responsible for The Hellions record that we lost our marbles over earlier this year. “So what?” we hear you cry. We’ll tell you what – this is next level brutal, but also harbors an ominous and slightly unsettling note that really does lend Stories a certain je ne sais quoi which appeals to our curious and insatiable appetite for the unusual.
Led by the magnetic Morgan Dodson, Stories have created a record that aches with taut pressure. The Youth To Become is a caustic blast of energy created by Dodson, his guitarist brother Nic, guitarist Sean Young, bassist Luke Fuller and drummer Roscoe Frazier who draws influence from post-hardcore, metal, alternative and progressive rock, but never dwells too long on a particular style.
The band have now revealed the first single from the album ‘Under Haze.’ Morgan explains of the track: “Being the last song we wrote on the album, it took little pieces from each stretch of the record and came together with a pretty dark vibe. We knew right from when we wrote it that it would be a cool song for people to hear first. Lyrically, I feel like I created a strong sense of imagery with this track, and it parallels with the high energy of the sounds.”
