Introducing: Rough Year

Characterized by themes of dispossession, abandonment, alienation and forced assimilation, Rough Year is a new producer from Philadephia turning a spotlight on the darker corners of the electronic world.

With the resurgence of civil rights protests around the world, their two stand-alone singles form a direct snapshot into the troublesome subject matter via sprawling beats and glitchy experimentalism, working alongside the rest of ‘Mongrel’, their debut EP, to illustrate the story of daily urban resistance and the ultimate triumph of human dignity against oppression.

This is bleak stuff but ultimately it hides a message of hope within its erratic beats and mangled melody – despotic and dystopian soundscapes that drown the listener in a heavy chloroform fug serve as an analogy for the modern world through the eyes and ears of a troubled mind.

‘Mongrel’ is so jam-packed full of bleeding-heart emotion, soul and an overriding urge to discover some compassion in the world that you’ll be left with a lump in your throat and a desire to give Rough Year a big old hug just to prove that humanity isn’t the most appalling creation in the universe.
