Background

Scooby-Doo is a long (decades) running cartoon series from Hannah-Barbera cartoon studio. The look hasn’t changed much down the years, so this makes for perhaps an overdue LEGO set (If these take off then expect the Flintstones not too far behind).

Building

5 bags separate the building stages of this medium size set. We start out with two of the main characters themselves, Scooby and Shaggy. Shaggy ius more traditional minifig, wheras the dog comes intact.  A nice little addition for shaggy is the inclusion of a rather large burger that you get to build.

Beyond this – in the first bag you also construct their speedboat (with set of jet skis!). And naturally to is decorated in much the same way as the Mystery Machine (See the set of stickers that you need to apply for this).

The next two bags changes focus to the main build itself with the base of the lighthouse. The final two bags built the light house itself and add the remaining minifigs. It won’t make long to piece all of this together, but so long as you are in no rush you’ll do it alone in an hour easy.

Finished product

The minifigs themselves are a strong selling point. Not only do the main characters look the part, but so do the villains with their reversible personalities.

The attention to smaller details also make this a fun set – with the addition of some transport- giving Shaggy the ability to water ski behind the boat adds an fun boost to the set, and the spooky affectations of the main building (Giant Spider Web, “Keep out” sign, Treasure Chest) add an extra dimension to the set.

The building is a fairly decent size, and LEGO are slowly it seems learning that it’s important to keep the cost (brick to pence ratio) as fair as it can be. It may be one of the most popular toys going, but in this day and age it can be all that more popular at the right price.
