Our Local Scene: Never Hill

When bands like Never Hill come along, you know that you’re onto a winner. The alternative pop rockers from Coventry are back with a special, extended version of their debut EP ‘Epilogue’, which is out now. This deluxe edition will include two previously unreleased, yet utterly stunning, alternate versions of ‘Fire’ and ‘Starting Line’. We caught up with bass player Jake Mendham to find out more about their Local Scene.

THE BANDS

TrueHeights

TrueHeights are a rock band from Leamington Spa, they remind me of a rockier version of The 1975. Their track City Lies is a personal favourite of mine! Zakk Poland has an amazing vocal, he can hold out some great, powerful notes, plus the band is extremely tight and they mirror that when they play live. You can see these dudes in a massive arena with those catchy ass melodies – go listen to them now!

The Prophets

The Prophets are a female-fronted pop punk band from Coventry. These guys are making a good name for themselves, and rightly so. They’re another tight band in a live environment and you won’t just stand and watch these guys, no! They are too catchy; your feet and body just goes into auto-dance mode. The band are good friends of ours and we’re happy that we’ve had the chance to share a stage with them. Again, go check them out!

Omaha

These boys are something else. They’re another band that we’re good mates with, and have also shared stages with. Omaha are going to be big and if not, we’ll take them with us! Their live sets are massive, strong melodies and sick riffs from all in the band. You need to watch these lads before they blow up.

VENUES AND HANGOUTS

“These venues are actually our hangout spots too. These and Subway, McDonalds, KFC or any food places in general – we love our food!”

The Queens Hall

Nuneaton’s pride and joy. We don’t have any other places in Nuneaton to play in, but all we need is this one. The owner, Rich, is a good friend of mine and he’s been able to put some sweet bands on recently like Skindred, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and more. The noise that comes out from their sound system is massive, they know their stuff. We are lucky enough to always sell out this place when we play, that’s due to a good promotional team and the loyal fans.

The Kasbah

Located in Coventry, this venue is the biggest we have around our area. It’s also a nightclub, so when we get to play we also have an after party there! They have a side room and a main room; both hold an incredible sound system. It’s a place to make new fans and it’s a must to play – it was always my aim when I started my first band to play here and I have done that, many a time!

The Arches

Again, found in Coventry, and although we haven’t actually played here as Never Hill we have as under our previous name, The Oceans Above. In time it’s really improved, it was never a bad place to begin with but with more bands coming out of Coventry they have definitely stepped their game up. I’ve watched a few of my friend’s bands in there and they sounded amazing. I’m sure we will play there at some point in the near future as Never Hill!
