We caught up with Monotreme Records latest signing, Oxford-born and Brighton-bred songwriter Ed Tullett, to get a special Spring Mixtape of his favourite seasonal tracks as part of our Four Seasons feature.
The singer-songwriter has recently won acclaim for his remix of Bon Iver’s “Hinnom, TX”, which has led to further remix work with Local Natives and Ajimal. His ongoing collaborative work with Novo Amor has been praised by NPR and The Line of Best Fit, and had over 1 million Spotify plays. Tullett’s material has also been featured on TV shows including Pretty Little Liars, Bones and Catfish.
His new album ‘Fiancé’ is out now and you can hear the record in full right here – see below for the mixtape:
1. Beck – Morning
“This is one of the most relaxing songs I’ve heard in a while. That ‘this morning’ melodic rise in the chorus is just so nice.”
2. Colour Revolt – Naked and Red
“Bit of a change of pace – I love this band so much – if you like aggressive, powerful-but-melodic voices and bands like Brand New you’ll probably love them too.”
3. Adult Jazz – Springful
“I mean the name fits, but maybe that’s a bit of a cop-out. I can’t remember being so excited about a debut record since Gist Is.”
4. Bombay Bicycle Club – Luna
“I can’t imagine listening to this song and not feeling good. I hate saying things like that, but it’s true. This whole record is wonderful.”
5. Toro Y Moi – Freaking Out
“Perhaps more of a summer song, but it’s great. Toro Y Moi is underrated in consistently strong output for someone so prolific.”
6. Menomena – Evil Bee
“Menomena’s Friend and Foe is kind of a silly record, but still better than most. The brass in this song is great and the ‘oh, to be a machine’ melody is super hooky – a cool lyric too.”
7. Death Cab for Cutie – Cath…
“If Summer needs major-chord based, upbeat, happy songs and Winter needs the minor-based opposite, then a lot of Death Cab is the perfect Spring music. ‘Cath…’ is a perfect example of their major sounding depression-pedaling that we all know and love (or hate).”
8. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Minor Thing
“Probably not the coolest choice, but it really reminds me of Spring as a kid. Spring often feels like a Sunday before school, this kind of weird, in between season. I’ve always preferred colder seasons. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to dislike RHCP.”
9. Local Natives – Who Knows Who Cares
“One of my favourite relatively young bands, both of their records are insanely good. This song drifts over you until the staple pace changing percussion.”
10. Tame Impala – Yes I’m Changing
“I saw them at Alexandra Palace last week, it was a great show. I’ve never been super into their older stuff, but this new record is so melodic, one of my favourites of last year.”
