Our Local Scene: Fall of Minerva

Italian atmospheric post-metal/post-hardcore heavyweights Fall of Minerva release their new record ‘Portraits’ on 25th March via Basick Records. Following in the footsteps of Cult of Luna, Devil Sold His Soul, Isis and more, Portraits is a crushing blend of monumental post-metal, post-rock and atmospheric post-hardcore. We caught up with them to find out more about the Italian scene that spawned them:

“First of all we’d like to say that we feel so lucky, because despite the fact that in Italy the hardcore (and related music) scene is not known for being the best, in our particular area we can say there is a good amount of bands trying to keep the passion alive. For example, every year Venezia Hardcore Fest takes place. This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, hardcore festivals in Italy, and this year DEAD SWANS will have a reunion show there. With this in mind, we would like to mention some of our favourite bands based in our area”

STORM{O}
“If you ever experience this band live, you’ll never forget it. They’re one of the most violent bands we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with. With their peculiarity of singing in Italian, they get straight to the point (if you can understand Italian of course) and it makes sense, considering that most of the bands just sing in English. We asked Luca (singer) to feature on our song ‘Träume’. This is the only song on our album ‘Portraits’ that is sung in our native language. We enjoyed this experience so much that we can definitely see ourselves writing another song like this with Italian vocals in the future.”

AMIA VENERA LANDSCAPE
“We were probably inspired by this band the most when Fall of Minerva began. All of the musicians in Amia Venera Landscape are incredible, and the music just speaks to peoples’ souls. They’ve been away from the music scene for a while, but this year they’re coming back with a new record. We advise keeping an eye on this band and we’re very excited for their comeback.”

DEVOTION.
“Perhaps not the typical “modern” band, these guys are the greatest keepers of 90’s and early 2000’s music of our area. They used to sound really similar to Deftones, and that is definitely a compliment, as we are talking about Holy Gods in the music world. Within Devotion.’s last two records, in particular the last one ‘Words And Crystals’ released in Feb 2016 through Pavement Entertainment/SONY and Bagana Records/AUDIOGLOBE, they gave something more personal than before in their music. We hope this band will continue their incredible work! They are like older brothers to us.”

Now let’s speak about some good venues in our area:

BOCCIODROMO
“This one is definitely one of our favourite venues. In fact, this is where our ‘Portraits’ release show is going to take place. It’s always good to go see shows and have fun in this venue, because it is owned by a community of people that occupied it 5 years ago, that leave to the occasional organizer of the show total freedom on the artists and on the music, working with a doordeal arrangement. What’s more, you’ll hardly pay more than 5 euros for a usual concert in this place, so it is one of the best places for playing and enjoying live music in our area.”

RIVOLTA MARGHERA
“This is another space managed by a community of people, and it is situated near the Harbor of Venice. Rivolta is really big; there are many rooms with different sizes, and some of them hold more than 1000 people. What makes this place different from every other big club around here is that the organizers maintain reasonable ticket prices, even if the artists are quite expensive. This is one of the big reasons why there were almost 2000 people at the Venice Hardcore Fest. Not bad at all for a Hardcore festival!”

MAME CLUB
“This is a club we like a lot which is a little different from the others. We’ve had the opportunity to play here twice, and one of these times we were supporting THIS WILL DESTROY YOU, which was one of the best shows we’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of. What we enjoy the most about this venue is the choice of artists offered (we’ve seen the likes of RUSSIAN CIRCLES, MONO and DEAFHEAVEN at this venue), the professional staff, and the really GREAT sound system.”
