Megadeth – Dystopia

Californian metal survivors Megadeth return with yet another blistering track of rifferama from their recent Dystopia album that comes complete with a characteristically ‘edgy’ animated video.

It’s a return to form for a band who most people will know thanks to Dave Mustaine’s appearances in Metallica’s endlessly amusing Some Kind Of Monster documentary. But with another tour and even an appearance on the Mr Smith Casino gaming site to look forward to, it looks like Megadeth will be casting their shadow over much of 2016.

Few bands have had such an enduring imprint on the evolution of metal as Megadeth. Since their origins in Los Angeles in 1983, the band have released a succession of iconic metal albums such as ‘Peace Sells But Who’s Buying’ and ’So Far, So Good, So What’. But despite the musical excellence, fans of the band have repeatedly had to endure the endless controversies surrounding their motormouth vocalist Dave Mustaine.

Of course, having outspoken characters in metal is nothing new. From Ted Nugent’s ridiculous remarks on religion, to Axl Rose’s ill-natured nihilism, it seems that bad behaviour and metal go hand in hand. But what makes Mustaine’s recent outbursts all the more surprising is that they frequently range from attacks on gays, to the blasting of Obama’s attempts to restrict gun crime in a way that highlights the ugly side to Mustaine’s supposed conversion as a born-again Christian.

It’s the latest in a series of surprising moves that Mustaine has taken since his acrimonious falling out as a member of Metallica. As well as writing and recording the track ‘Sudden Death’ specifically for the Guitar Hero series, Mustaine has also allowed Mr Smith Casino to feature a Megadeth-themed slots game on their gaming site which is a good tip for any metal fan who wants to see how the genre is adapting in new and surprising ways.

But it’s undoubtedly the live arena where Megadeth work best. The band are currently midway through an extensive world tour that will see them travelling all across North and South America before they head back to Europe where they play Download Festival at Castle Donington in June.

And with a renewed vigour in their music and an increased profile online thanks to the exploits of Dave Mustaine and his Megadeth slots game, it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more of the thrash metal titans throughout the year.
