Sharon Martin - Girl
Single Review

Sharon Martin – Girl

Glaswegian singer Sharon Martin has a long association with the Scotland Women’s football team. Her new single Girl has been adopted as an anthem by the team, and it’s well worth a listen. In addition to its inspiring lyrics, Girl is also a very good pop song.

The track was written by Martin and she also co-produced it with Sandy Jones and Graeme Duffin from Wet Wet Wet, Musically it starts off quite simply, just acoustic guitar and some lovely vocals. A piano joins in as the pace picks up and an instrumental section works well – although the burst of bagpipes is probably a little too much.

Lyrically, Girl is motivational, encouraging women to follow in the footsteps of some of Scotland’s great women and to smash the glass ceiling. A political song with plenty of positivity, Girl works well on many levels. The catchy chorus has a nice hook and the repeated “You can be, anything you believe you can be” sums up its message,

So if you like upbeat pop, then got onto iTunes and download this one. It’s also worth checking out the lyrics which cover a wide range of Scottish women’s history.
