Busty and The Bass – Eddie

Well, this one was a pleasant surprise to me. I’d never heard of Busty and the Bass, who hail from Montreal. The eight piece collective mixes electronic, soul and hip hop into a bright summery sound with lovely melodies and a huge jazz influence. Not surprising really, as the group first came together through the jazz program at McGill University.

Twin vocalists and a horn section, plus contributions from several superstar guests, give this album a full and varied sound. Eddie is the second album from the group, following 2017’s well received Uncommon Good. The production quality is excellent and the music seems to be alive with energy.

Out Of Love opens the album in real style, as a trumpet fanfare introduces Macy Gray, who gives a typically soulful vocal performance. Baggy Eyed Dopeman features funk legend George Clinton in a smooth and mellow track. Clouds has Amber Narvan from Moonchild on vocals in a slower track that evokes longing perfectly. Guest appearances don’t always work, but here the additional contributions fit nicely into the musical approach.

There are other good tracks on display too. Kids is a lovely piano led song, the slower tempo and solid rhythm giving it a laid back feel with a fine vocal performance. Cold Nights is another slow and atmospheric song, building nicely in emotional waves. And the title track Eddie has a lovely smooth vibe with a sweeping vocal that hits some impressively high notes.

This is a diverse album, full of bright songs and relaxed funky rhythms. Working with Grammy winning producer Neal Pogue and Earth Wind & Fire’s Verdine White (executive producer) gives a real polish to some fine instrumental work. The horn hooks and the quality of the various vocal performances really stand out, giving an upbeat and funky feel. Ultimately Eddie is a little bit different and a whole lot of fun.
