Single review – Dickey Doo & Jamecia Bennett: Do What You Want (Hypernatural)

A big, bold burst of positive energy is definitely what’s needed as we crawl from Christmas to Spring and precisely that’s what ‘Do What You Want’ from Canadian-born, Berlin-based DJ Dickey Doo and Sounds of Blackness singer Jamecia Bennett offers us.

It wastes precious little time bursting into action with a distinctly old skool mix of house and garage and a ridiculously infectious piano motif riding joyously above it. Then we get Bennett storming in with an intensely powerful vocal performance that’s sure to get your hairs sticking up on end, showing the gospel roots that gained her Emmys and reputation alike, but quite at home In this altogether more attitude-heavy affair.

It’s an unlikely international pairing but an inspired one, and another feather in the cap of Berlin’s fast rising hipster house camp definitely a name to watch in 2021.
