EP Review: De Wolt – Our Love Is Gone EP (Hypernatural)

De Wolt is a three piece band based in Neukölln, Berlin featuring the members, Danny Kotz, João Neves and Stefano Di Puma aka Berryfeels.  Combining hand built music products and found-on-the-street vintage keyboards, their sound takes you back to the birth of Atari gaming while simultaneously pogoing in the middle of a sweaty Kreuzberger moshpit.

Our Love is Gone’ EP is a two-song double A-side EP where the trio declares their love for music over anything else – “even girlfriends, wives, cats and dogs” according to the press release.

They’re signed to the Berlin ‘hipster house’ label Hypernatural, who readers of these pages will know from previous releases by Jack The Box (featuring hip house hero Tyree Cooper) and some other equally club-slanted material.  De Wolt are a slightly different prospect, fusing rock and dance, as you’ll gather from these two tracks.

With “Music Hunters” they pay tribute to their musical influences while describing the creative process of putting a song together, while “Our Love is Gone”, the title song for the EP, brings a more direct and “punk” approach while descending through the process of mourning a relationship with all the emotional range of feelings that provokes.

Danny says “The distorted guitar riffs from João brought exactly the energies we needed in order to bring “Our Love Is Gone” to full compilation and to maximize its message. We find joy in the process of exploring the fusion between analog electronic synths, and the sonic universe of guitars and digital sound processing realm. This is definitely a direction that we are growing to as well as a live band.”
