ETTA MARCUS SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE ‘MECHANICAL BULL’

ETTA MARCUS today shares the video for her new single ‘Mechanical Bull’. The black and white visual, which features Etta Marcus riding a bucking bronco, was directed by the 22-year-old musician herself alongside co-director Oskar Brockbank.

‘Mechanical Bull’ is the first new music to be released since Etta Marcus’ acclaimed Heart-Shaped Bruise EP in January, which NME described as feeling “like a frosted window into the aching heart of an artist who is writing her imperfect story in real-time.”

Speaking about the track, Etta says, “Mechanical Bull is a sarcastic love letter to the never-ending nature of a monotonous lifestyle. I wanted to express my desires and fears around the rejection of conformity and the embarrassment that goes along with stepping outside expectations.” ‘Mechanical Bull’ was written with producer Josh Scarbrow, Etta’s co-writing partner and produced/mixed by Rodhaidh McDonald (The xx, Beck.)

‘Mechanical Bull’ gives a taste of what to expect from the music Etta Marcus has been creating while holed up in a secluded cabin in Whitstable. Sonically it represents another shift in direction for the singer-songwriter who continues to defy pigeon-holing, carving out an artistic identity all her own. Over the course of her first two EPs; last year’s self-released acclaimed debut EP, View From The Bridge and the recent Heart-Shaped Bruise, critics have drawn comparisons with the likes of Lana Del Rey, Fiona Apple, Sharon Van Etten and Phoebe Bridgers but with influences spanning David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Radiohead and Everything But The Girl, Etta resists being boxed in any specific genre. “If anyone calls me something, I immediately want to do the opposite” she says. “How would you describe a Cass Elliot, The Strokes and a wannabe Jeff Buckley concoction?”

Having been kicked out of jazz school at the start of the pandemic, Brixton born and raised Etta had hit rock bottom. However, the last two years have seen her gain a growing cult-like following drawn to her sharp story-telling and beguiling lyrics, marking her out as one of the most compelling new artists of recent times.

Etta Marcus will perform at festivals over the summer including Barn On The Farm, Latitude, Camp Bestival and Green Man.
